    What is the difference?

Historical accuracy aside, my question is a bit simple...what is the difference in a "braveheart ancient" and "braveheart great" kilt? I was under the impression that the G.K. was the predecessor to the modern kilt today, i.e. the ancient variant.

    Thanks,

    Zach

I recently received a print catalog from Celtic Croft, and from their catalog description on how their Ancient Kilt (Braveheart tartan or otherwise) differs from the Great Kilt:

"The Ancient Kilt is basically a Phillabeg with an extra 2-3 yards of tartan attached. The extra tartan serves as a sash or fly plaid, worn over your shoulder once the kilt is pleated. An Ancient Kilt is different from a Great Kilt because it is made from a longer piece of single-width fabric (25-30 inches wide). This means you don't have the bulk of fabric above the belt that you do with a great kilt. (Great kilts are made from double-width fabric, 54-60 inches wide).

In short Celtic Croft's "Ancient" kilt has less material than their more authentic "Great" kilt.

Their so-called "ancient kilt" has no counterpart in history - except for Hollywood history...!

Thanks for the replies! That is what I was kind of thinking, that they were going for the look rather than the authenticity. Thanks guys!
