Hey, The Silmarillion is pretty cool.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

He better not be in the Hobbit! Well...I suposse when they are in Mirkwood, he could make an appearance. The Elven King IS Legolas' father after all...maybe he could be the guy who gets drunk and falls asleep and essentially let's Bilbo go on a barrel ride down the river
(ps- Pippin is played by Billy Boyd)
pps- WHERE WAS I when all of this LOTR discussion was taking place!? I have a lot of catching up to do.

and Galadriel... lol
Gimli isn't in the trailer. His father is, though.
Seeing Galadriel in the trailer really confused the hell out of me. However, I am not going to join on the "lets talk smack about Peter Jackson for putting her in the movie when shes not in the book" bandwagon because there are literally NO females in The Hobbit whatsoever. Jackson added so many scenes for Arwen in LOTR because the massive amount of testosterone in the movies was too much. Even though Glorfindel doesnt make the cut (......) and Arwen does, he did it on purpose to bring some women into the movies (even though he traded Glorfindel, one of the most bad ass elves EVER, for Arwen)
Same with Galadriel in The Hobbit. There literally isnt a single female in that entire book. Without Galadriel in the movie, we girls would be reduced to dressing up like Smaug or....or...heaven forbid, GOLLOM during premier night

I suppose you could always dress as an elf lady because the genders of the elves in the disappearing elf parties of the forest were not described in the hobbit. I suppose the presence of women were implied elsewhere, rather than described. Sometimes the unseen implied is more powerful than the seen.

It's just kind of neat to see someone creating a whole mythology and history like that. I doubt it could be made into a movie.

This is true..perhaps I will ;)
My uncle and I want to dress up for opening night. He suggested I go as Smaug...I think I will go as an Elven lady.
(is it ultra nerdy if I go as my Elvish character on the LOTR forum? LOL)
side note- Whats really cool about the whole LOTR series is the fact that J.R.R. Tolkien didn't intend to create this incredible fantasy epic. He actually wrote the books as a linguistics experiment. He set out to prove that language defines culture. In other words, how your language is, your culture is. The Elves have a flowing, romantic and beautiful language because they themselves are flowey, romantic and beautiful. Mordor has a gutteral, harsh language because they inhabitants are gutteral and harsh.

Ya, I've seen a little bit about that here and there.
I did a little more looking. From The Hobbit again, in chapter I, there is discussion of "Belladonna Took" who's married name became "Mrs. Bungo Baggins." You could dress as a lady hobbit if you wish, and still be true to the book.
There were also women mentioned as living in the lake town as seen in chapter XIV, as the dragon attacks the town and they load women and children into the boats, then again as the elves come to help rebuild.
It's not much, but they're there.
Hope you enjoy the movie when it happens.

Re: One elf that doesnt make toys...
Just to to enter the discussion again.
Galadriel was one of the founders of the white counsel among whom were Gandalf and Saruman. During the rest of the events in the Hobbit the white counsel met and drove the Necromancer from his hold in Mirkwood. It is likeliest thing that the white counsel should meet in the last hold of the light elves in middle earth, Rivendel. Therefore, Galadriel would be in Rivendel, giving counsel to Gandalf (Galadriel was also kin to Elrond through Elrond's wife).
