Smile "As others see us..." Too funny not to share

From last fall or so, I have been on a quest to read as many Terry Pratchett books as I can find. For those not familiar, the late Sir Terry lived in England and wrote many, many novels and short stories. It could be argued as to whether he wrote fantasy or science fiction as his works have elements of both. Regardless, he was particularly noted for his sly humor and elegant satire.

I am now reading "Turtle Recall", the companion volume to his work in which the characters, locales, history and customs of his created world(s) are sorted and explained. I came across this bit which was too good not to share here.

He is describing Klatch (a distant city) and its relationship to Ankh-Morpork, the city-state in which most of his writing is set:

"Klatch, however is clearly a rival and is also obviously foreign, and there is that strange love-hate relationship that always exists between two nations whose fortunes are historically intertwined (cf. England and France, the United States North and South, Western Australia and the rest of Australia, Scotland and Scotland.)"

I had to put the book down from laughing so hard.

I can relate to his point. I look in the mirror with the mind set of a ten year old and see the wrinkles of a guy I don't like looking at. I then have to make that face look presentable to other folks.

Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors. I especially like the comments he makes in the footnotes.
