    Atholl Highlanders

Does any one know if the Atholl Highlanders kilts are pleated to the stripe or the sett?

My father in-law, a Murray, recently passed away and as a way of honoring him I am looking at ordering a kilt in the Murray of Atholl tartan. Now I normally wouldn't consider wearing a non-family tartan but he was such a great friend to me and admired by me for his dedication and devotion to my daughter.

This is the best pic I could find, looks like to the stripe.

Here is the Murray of Atholl Weathered, my favorite Murray tartan.

    And pleat shot.

    Rob,

Many thanks! Truth be told I personally think that Murray of Atholl is one of the most beautiful of tartans, you've made a brilliant choice by the way!
I've been toying with this for over twenty years, about 4-5 years seriously trying to decide which variation... I am no closer to deciding today as when I started! LOL!
My father in-law was such a great Granddad, Dad and friend and ready provider of a cold beer. Makes deciding that much more serious a consideration!

Since the Atholl Highlanders are the only legal private army left in Western Europe, and they are in fact their own regiment, I would suggest pleating your kilt to the line, as they do. You can obviously see that in the photo presented. You can also google image 'Atholl Highlanders' and a plethora of photos showing the regiment will pop up. I would recommend pleating to the red stripe for a handsome effect. Good luck!

Either way you do it it should be nice. J. Higgins make me one in that tartan and I had them pleat it to the sett. Rocky made me a semi-trad in the ancient Atholl PV which he keeps and also pleated it to the sett.

I really like both of them.

They pleat to stripe. That stripe is also much broader, and looks much nicer, than that commonly seen today. That does not mean that it's not possible to get the correct setting. PM me if you want info.
