Blue and Green Tartans

I received an email with a special offer on the MacDonald of the Isles Tartan and was very appreciative of the blue/green of the tartan.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any other blue/green tartans they really like, particularly if they are not clan tartans? The MacDonald of the Isles is listed as a fashion tartan.

I'm rather partial to this Tartan.

And here is a Kilt made up.

It is listed with the STA as #7992, The Victoria, City of Gardens Tartan.

A quick and easy search can be done on USA kilts site. Rocky has a nice tartan finder with a "universal and district" tartans section.

It has lots of blue/green tartans shown.

Check out Isle of Skye, it also has purple in it. Very beautiful.

I really like the blue and green of Strathmore's Wilson's of Bannockburn colours. Lochaber is a district tartan they do that way.

Marton Mills weaves it in a large 12" sett, but in Ancient colours, even though they call it weathered.

My favorite green on green kilt is the Macdonald Lord of the Isles

There are also some nice Irish tartans that are heavy on green - Ireland's National and Irish National (I think those are the names).

For blue, my favorite is probably the Royal Air Force tartan.

And, also like the U.S. Navy tartan, blue on blue.

Not sure if it'd really be considered "blue" but the Texas Bluebonnett tartan is beautiful too...and it has a bit of green in with the hues of blue.

I would second Wally's suggestion of the Isle of Skye as a beautiful blue+green+purple tartan that is also non-clan related and very beautiful and popular (I have one too).

My other suggestion would be Douglas, particulalry in Ancient colors:

Although it is a clan tartan it is also used somewhat generically as it was a military tartan for a while in its normal "modern" colors, and douglas was a particulalry large clan with lots of septs, so it has a broad population base of wearers. One of my favorite colorsets.

Are you looking for tartans that only contain blue and green? Otherwise, perhaps half of the tartans woven will have a predominantly blue and green sett.

To expand on Matt's point, in The Setts Of The Scottish Tartans DC Stewart says:

...the majority of tartans fall into one of two almost equal groups- those with a green ground and those with a red.

A considerable proportion of the designs of the green tartans have a common structural basis, consisting of a broad blue band contained within narrower bands of black...

On this foundation is built up a scheme of black, red, yellow, light blue, or white lines. Black lines, only, are employed in the Black Watch tartan. In the others it is usual to find light lines in the green rather than in the blue band; where two bright colours are used, and distributed over the green and the blue, the lighter is usually in the green.
