The consensus from the experts seems to be that it is a variant of a weathered dress Mackenzie so that is what I will go with. What a long answer for when people ask....

I don't say "MacDonald of Clanranald Muted" or "MacDonald of the isles Modern" when asked. I usually just say "MacDonald". If there are more questions I'm happy to discuss it further, but I think for most people the short answer is better.

I'm a bit perplexed now, you have been told what the tartan is, by one of the acknowledged experts and you still don't accept it so I'm not sure what more we can do to help .
