Tartan Quilts??

Got to wondering if any of our kiltmakers save the extra tartan scraps from kiltmaking and give them to quiltmakers to sew up quilts with tartans in the quilt.

Not a patchwork quilt of multiple tartans - the garments made that way seem so busy.

Thinking more sections with a common tartan on a common solid color cloth complimentary to the colors of the tartan used in the quilt.

Seems there'd be a market.

Maybe I'm way late with the idea...?? Can find patchwork quilts with tartans, but no solid quilts with one tartan inserts.

I've given a few scraps to a family friend. My mom was a big quilter, but has stopped, and passed along her scraps as well. Her use for scraps: Crazy Quilts. She didn't make this one, but a good Crazy Quilt sample.

My favourite patchwork pattern is called 'trip around the world' and consists of squares sewn in lines - it can be started with a central rectangular panel or a single square. You'll find a few if you Google for it.

The skill is in sorting the squares into similar shades for each line and then in arranging the colours pleasingly without wasting many squares.

A few lines of tartans would provide an interesting challenge - though I think three or four on any quilt would be enough for anyone.

If forrestermodern keeps having kilts made, I will someday, make a "kilt quilt" from the scraps. We a drawer started in th kilt room.

I save all scraps (a good thing and a bad thing...if you do it too, you know what I mean)
I have seen an awsome coat made out of wool tartan 4" squares, alot of work.
I always plan on hats, hose etc. the long and skinny scraps make it into my braided rug at least.

My friend has also been making "Crazy Pillows" with some of the tartan. Similar pattern (or lack thereof), but formed as a throw pillow.

Doesn't look like it, but it could be done. The trouble would be finding "scraps" big enough to be used for the panels. Most kilt scraps that I have seen are either long strips or little pieces cut out of the pleats. If you're thinking what I'm thinking you're thinking, you'd want squares of about 8 inches, which would be bordered by a solid color band. The squares could have mottoes, crests, family names, and all sorts of things embroidered on them.
I hope you have one of these made, Ron. I'd like to see a MacDonald quilt.
