West Virginia has a state tartan!

West Virginia has a state tartan! I don't know if it has been recognized by Lord Lyon as yet, but Glena is weaving it! It is based on the WV Shawl found in the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Barboursville, WV. The colors are red- for the cardinal (state bird), yellow- for the fall colors of the sugar maple (state tree), dark blue- for mountain rivers and lakes, black- for black bear (state animal), green for rhododenron (state flower) and mountain meadows, azure for the sky above, and a "ribbon of white to embrace the colors of our nation."

I thought you would appreciate this Harv. Which do you prefer? I actually like the second as the red represents the cardinal better and encorporates the black and white lines. Gotta represent the Black Bear!

I also like the first one also, as it reminds me of the Potts tartan, my maternal tartan.

Lately I've been very earth-toney, so I prefer the first, but the second is more striking.
Either way, this will go on my list.

Hey! I just went to Tartan Ferret, which I should have done first (before going to the trouble of the computer-generated image). You live and Learn!

And guess what I found.....

WV Old Shawl Tartan ITI#4252 Date: 1820

and West Virginia Tartan ITI#7631

I also realized that the black and white lines were added to the original tartan as they wanted to differentiate from the original 1820 shawl. And encorporate the Black Bear!!

Very nice tartan. Congratulations to the fine citizens of West Virginia.

Interesting article, but odd that the writer is still under the mistaken impression that the Lord Lyon has anything to do with tartans. Mayhaps we should send this article (http://albanach.org/official.htm) to them to relieve their distress as to the "official" status of the WV tartan.
