    Steele surname

I have been looking at some family history and have found ancestors with the surname "Steele". One of them is a certain John Steele, born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1809. Does anyone know if the surname "Steele" is associated with any of the clans?

    Gordon might take you...

They would I believe have been NE Scotland though... Steele might also be an English or Irish name though and someine from Ayrshire could as easily have been from either of those locations too...

I have a database of some 30,000 surnames.

Both Steel and Steele are listed as a Sept of, or associated with, Clan Gordon.

I also understand that it has some association with Clan McGregor, I imagine from when the name was banned?

Scots Kith & Kin, rev 2nd ed(Albyn Press LTD)lists both Steel and Steele as being found in the Borders in the 13th century, and Edinburgh etc. int he 15th century. There is now association with a clan shown, which is not unusual for the lowlans.

My mom's family are Steeles from Aberdeen. I wondered what tartan was associated with the name.
