Buccleuch is pronounced Buh-CLEW in Scotland. The Duke of Buccleuch is the largest landowner in the UK and has many other ventures as well. His great aunt, Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott became Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester - The Queen's aunt.

    Thanks starbkjrus!

Very interesting indeed. I have seen Buckalew also written as Bucklew. Easy to see how Buccleugh would have been recorded as Buckalew/Bucklew.

Yes, as a derived Buckalew (and Scott), I have lots of information. Les Buckalew used to have a terrific web site for the family, but has been ill, and let it lapse. I've been offering to take it over for him.

Basically, the Buckalews seems to have come over, not from Scotland, but from Holland in the early 1600s to Perth Amboy, NJ. Evidence prior to that, is as always, speculative, but the common assumption is that the name is derived from the Scottish name with similar sound.

It is highly likely that you and I are cousins of a sort.

I hope you will be able to take it over.

I did see that, but from what I found it seemed that the Buckalews originated in Scotland, possibly went to another country (Not sure for how long) and then found their way to America. I think the other country may have been France?

That is very cool. My Buckalew line did come from New Jersey. My line married Scottish Campbells. Sound familiar?

Finally. I found that yahoo had resurrected as much of Geocities as it was able to, including Les Buckalew's amazing efforts at Buckalew genealogy (and there is tons and tons of it!). It can be found at a new site here: http://www.reocities.com/~buckalew/rr_toc.htm

We have a Buckalew Farm here in Southern Arizona. The family that runs is sell everything from pumpkins at Halloween (and corn mazes), and trees at Christmas. Fun for the kids.

Here's a fun site to see where surnames are found.
