Can someone give me a quick definition of a "corporate" tartan? Does it differ in some way from a "fashion" or "universal" tartan?

I wear the two versions of my Foster/Forrester family tartan, modern and hunting. I also wear MacDonald and douglas in different variations as Forresters were known septs of each clan, although I cannot prove with any data that my particular family line was part of one or the other. I have an Allen kilt under construction as there is a strong alliance in my bloodline between one family of allens and the foster male lineage (three consecutive generations of my foster male lineage married Allen women who were aunt and two different nieces in the same family. so actually there is more allen blood running in my veins than Foster, technically. I also wear the IoS and Black Isle district tartans becasue of their beauty, along with the maple leaf for the same reason. Others coming are Ancient Caledonia district tartan and Ancient Red douglas. And I have some of the 18oz Black watch tartan I am considering having made up into my first kilt pleated to stripe.
So I voted "all familly lines to which I am related".

So far I've been rather eclectic about my tartans, with the exception that I try to keep them to a "family" line. The more I research, the more Scottish linage I find. My Moms side especially has Gordons, Cameron's, Hayes, Moore (Muir/Mure), seems the farther back we go the more Scots we find. My dads side is even more mixed, but the surname is a direct Scottish Sept of Lindsay.
I wear Cleric as an ordained minister, an Irish Saffron to honor my mothers Irish/Scots heritage, a Gordon To honor her grandmother's family, but my main kilt is a Lindsay. I have a Pride of Scotland in the making, well just cause it was a neat tartan. There are enough tartans out there to keep me in kilts for quite a while.

I'm with Jock on this, however I will admit that when I was an officer of a Scottish philanthropic organization back in the 70s all of the officers (myself included) wore black Stewart kilts to all official functions. When I left the organization I gave away the kilt.

Clan tartan, no. I will not wear the tartan of another clan, for any purpose other than living history. I wear the MacKenzie weathed for that. I have no issue wearing non clan tartans, but as far as clan tartans go, I won't wear any other than MacLeod, as that's my blood tie. I will wear the Wolfe family tartan, as I also have that bloodline. I proudly wear the Colorado state tartan, as Colorado is my home. I am a child of the highlands of North America. I wear the Albannach tartan (I'm a huge fan of those guys and am a proud Misfit, not to mention the fact that the tartan is beautiful!). Let's see... What other tartans do I have? I have a wool Nightstalker from Stillwater Kilts. It's universal, so I have no issues with that, and I like the subdued color scheme.
So there you have it- clan tartans, no. There is no point really! My clan has 30 different tartans! I can spend the rest of my life buying kilts from my own clan tartan, and have more kilts than I know what to do with! So why wear tartans of other clans when there are so many options for my own? Universal, family, and corporate tartans? Those are, I think, up to the taste and sensibilities of the individual. So those I have no problem with. (And as an aside, I actually appreciate seeing people who are not of MacLeod ancestory wearing our tartans- I find it flattering that they like one of our 30 some tartans enough to wear it!)

I voted for the "I wear any clan tartans" but truth be told, I don't own any. I might get a kilt in one of my wife's clan tartans one day, but at this time all my kilts are in "fashion" or universal tartans. I have at one time or another referred to the X-Marks, American Heritage, Ireland's National and Saffron as my 'clan tartan' though. (actually, Dad and I call the Ireland's National and Saffron our gang colors)

I voted any bloodline. This is true in principle, but in fact I can only trace backwards to one clan, on my mother's side, and that is the Irish clan of O'Callaghan. I don't even have a kilt in that tartan , but maybe one day I might. Irish family tartans are mostly special weave, and costly.
I do have half a dozen names in my family tree that are allegedly septs of Scottish clans, but short of tracing one of them back to the right area of Scotland I assume I am not connected to the clan and will not wear their tartan. Most of these names are of ambiguous nationality, and not necessarily just between Scottish and English, as many Scottish border names are. One of them (my mother's mother's maiden name) is found both in Scotland and in Flanders, and in fact is more likely Flemish than Scottish.
My father's mother's maiden name could be originally either English, Irish or Scottish, each branch having originated separately. There is a registered tartan for those of that name who are of Scottish origin, but it is not recognised as a clan (nor is it a sept of any clan). I rather think it would be a special weave tartan as well. I suppose if I found that the name was from the Scottish branch I would feel free to wear that tartan, but not otherwise.
