One word - Dheiro ?

Hello all,

Could anyone give me a quick translation of the word 'Dheiro'?

I believe it to be the name of a large house or the name of the estate. Various of my wife's family were born at Dheiro, Tongue, Sutherland. I know Tongue to be a small hamlet (two men and a dog).

So does Dheiro actually mean anything or is it just a house name like 'SeaView'?

I get your inference. "Two men and a dog" is a turn of phrase and in British English refers to a small place. "One horse town" is another option. "Two houses and a church" or "Two houses and a pub" are others. I don't think Chas meant anything smutty.

Thanks for the link. I've only given it a quick scan so far and haven't seen any reference to Dheiro, but I shall continue. There does seem to be a great deal of 'sucking up' to the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland (Countess of Sutherland) - she of the clearances fame.

After a little creative searching, I'm guessing the place you're looking for is what appears to be a single building named "Dherue" or "Dithreibh", located just south of Loch an Dherue, a.k.a. Loch an Dithreibh, a.k.a. Loch an Dherve, itself located south-southwest of the Kyle of Tongue. There is also a steep hill to the east of the loch named Creag an Dherue, or Creag an Dithreibh. Also south of the loch are a stream named Allt an Dithreibh and a valley named Srath an Dithreibh. The name probably comes from dìthreabh, meaning "desert", "unihabited", "uncultivated", etc.
