Then they joined hands in a circle as they treaded water in the ocean and cackled out loud with great enthusiasm and spirit. A truely lovely experience.

No way, not at Red Sands - and the Crones were enjoying a most primal spiritual experience.

Then there is Irish "cron" with fada accent mark over the "o" - pronounced like crone but means swarthy. Probably off base on this one but thought I would throw it out there.
