There are actually several communities in Cape Breton and Newfoundland, albeit in Newfoundland they're smaller outport communities, where Gaelic is still the main spoken language in conversation. And there's actually a Gaelic University in Cape Breton as well!

I was at the Saturday market last week with my paintings and another artist who I'd talked to before noticed I was in a kilt and so we talked .... he started saying Gaelic sentences - apparently he's fairly fluent (but I didn't have a clue what he was saying)
But yeah, there is some strong Gaelic area in Nova Scotia - Cape Breton being one focal point.
Yes, I was aware of the Gaelic College and that there are Gaelic speaking areas out there. The pleasant surprise is a Canadian being recognized for his abilities and contributions.
