Portrait of Sir James Duff, 5th Earl Fife

To follow up on the post by creagdhubh of two Macpherson grandees, here is a photo of a painting of Sir James Duff, Earl Fife. Lord Duff died in 1879. I'm not sure what year the portrait was painted.

Great portrait. The facial hair from this era has always left me anxious for the time that I may grow one myself.

Nice painting. Looks to me like a velvet regulation Doublet.

The sharp eyed will no doubt have spied the Earl's badge used as a kilt pin, and that his crest, surrounded by a strap and buckle, is attached to his baldric just above its buckle.

Setting aside the baldric and sword, his noble Lordship would look perfectly in place at any modern tartan ball.

I also like the Earl's buckle brogues. Unlike those available today, the buckle appears to be higher up the instep.

Superb portrait, Sandy! Thank you for sharing - perhaps we should keep this sort of thread going for a wee while? I absolutely love seeing the variations in Highland dress, especially formal/evening Highland attire, in which so many of these remarkable sitters are wearing. I have many more "Macpherson" portraits that I can readily share.

Good idea Kyle, I also like to see how those of some nobility/distinction dressed in highland attire in the past.
