    Books at Clan Tents

I need to get some books for our clan tent and was wondering which ones they should be. I do have a couple but none that are really that good. I know I need one showing tartans so that those that are not Livingston(e)s can see what theirs might be. Any suggestions would be appreciated but not all will be acted on immediately.

Here's a few suggestions to get started:

    Black's Surnames of Scotland
    Tartan for Me, Phil Smith
    Scots Kith and Kin
Scottish Clan and Family Encyclopedia, George Way of Plean, Romilly Squire

I would agree with Tartan for Me - probably the single most used reference in any clan tent. The perhaps the following -

Clans and Families of Scotland: The History of the Scottish Tartan [Hardcover]
    Alexander Fulton (Author)

Clans and Tartans Map of Scotland (Collins Pictorial Maps)

    District Tartans [Hardcover]
Gordon Teall and Philip Smith (Authors)

Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia [Hardcover]
George Way, George Way of Plean, Romilly Squire (Authors)

The Oxford Companion to Scottish History (Oxford Paperback Reference)
    Michael Lynch
"The Highland dress is essentially a ‘free' dress - that is to say, a man's taste and circumstances must alone be permitted to decide when and where and how he should wear it... I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed." .Hon. Stuart Ruaidri Erskine

To which I would add that, with the exception of Black's SURNAMES, it would probably be useful to have two copies of each on the table.

Great ideas. I like the idea of 2 of most of them but that will have to wait a year or two yet. Last year I concentrated on getting a tent together that was at least presentable so this year I am adding substance. Everything should be looking good about the time I turn it over to someone else.

That is one of the VERY few I already have. I make sure to keep that one handy in case Barb happens to stop by.

"Tartans" by Brian Wilton (of the Scottish Tartans Authority).
"Matthew Newsome's Patented Advice for First Time Kilt Wearers"
"All About Your Kilt" by Bob Martin

Some other titles that folks might find interesting:

"Scots in the North American West 1790-1917" by Fernec Szasz
"White People, Highlanders and Indians" by Colin Calloway
"Highland Heritage: Scottish Americans in the American South" by Celeste Ray

Thank you, Todd. I knew you'd be posting some of the "unusal" books that others wouldn't think of.

Now to figure out which books I get in which order.
