The coin came about when Terry and I were discussing options for the pommel. Terry sent me a photo of an asortment of buttons, jewels and other bobbles... But none looked appealing. I wanted something on the knife to incorporate one of the iconic symbols of Scotland, be it a thistle, lion rampant, saltire cross, or whatever. As I've handled enough coins and silver rounds over the years, I asked Terry if there were any contemporary currency coins that would be of suitable size and appearance. He told me that since decimalization, there was currently nothing suitable, but that he'd reccommend the U.K. Coin once known as the "Scottish Shilling". He suggested the birth year thing. A quick Google search for an image of the coin, and I approved. Terry found a coin on eBay, and the result can be seen above. Now, looking at the pics above, I know we made the right choice. It's the perfect topper for my knife.

My sgian dubh has arrived! The photos of the knife that appear throughout this thread dont do justice to what the knife looks like, when held "in hand."
From initial inquiry, through the exchange of ideas for specifications and negotiation of pricing, through construction, and delivery... Terry has not only been a real pleasure to work with, but has created something I will truly be proud to own! My sgian dubh has exceeded all expectations!

I also had a quick chat with Terry about a possible commission, and just need to start saving the pennies. His 'by installments' will certainly make it a lot easier, and I just can't wait to scrape together enough to get him started.
He really exudes enthusiasm, helps turn your dreams into a practical reality and just talking to him, you KNOW he's a craftsman to the core. Can't wait to get home and be able to see your pics as our blasted server blocks them...
I may just start salivating and trying to pinch the kids lunch money...

To all who enjoyed watching my sgian dubh come to life here, I've just talked with Terry about a dirk to match. Similar motif, but meant to have a couple subtle differences. Part of a set, but not cast from the same mold. Complimenting, not matching.
He's got other jobs ahead of me in the queue, so it may be a couple months before pics come. Stay tuned.

That really is quite something. Really must think of a design that I would like. I want one. Superb work Terry and congrats Ken on having something that is really special.
Kind regards- Simon
