Black Watch Memorial, Dundee

On a hill in the Claverhouse area to the north of the city of Dundee stands the War Memorial to the Dundee and Angus Battalions of the Black Watch Regiment.

The Black Watch Memorial.

The statue and plinth, with its inscription.

A recent wreath from The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Up at the Memorial.

The lone figure of the kilted soldier commands a fine view across the city of Dundee. The tall structures in the distance are support legs for North Sea Oil Platforms in the Firth of Tay.

Nice photos, Alex. Does the memorial include the grounds surrounding it, or is it confined to the immediate area of the statue? That's a great view from the memorial.

That statue could almost be of a typical member of my regiment!
Well, if you looked close up you could probably make out the Black Watch badges on the bonnet and collars, and the hackle behind the bonnet badge, but the kilt reflects no tartan (well, the stripes are all woven in, aren’t they, not incised) and the pouch is the same as we wore in my regiment.
Thanks for posting it, Alex.
Regards,
Mike

Hello Cessna....
I must thank you for posting these pics.
They brought back a few home memories for me.
The statue I think was recently moved if I remember correctly.
I originally stood on the top o' Powrie Brae on the old road north to Forfar.
I always stopped there in my cycling days to ponder for a moment and take a few pics.
This post is well timed as I am in the process of painting the Mains Castle which stands
a mere mile south of the statue. It is believed that the castle was built in 1562 by David Graham of Fintry.
Thanks again..

The Claverhouse area is part of Dundee I have never visited - must correct that situation!

Cheers Alex. It's an impressive memorial isn't it?
