In Lancashire there are a number of artistic structures positioned on various high points allowing excellent panoramic views of the surrounding country on clear days. Today was such a day. My mate Doublewood Dave was over for the weekend so, leaving my wife sun-bathing in the back garden, we jumped in the car and went to have a look at the "Singing Ringing Tree" up on Crown Point near Burnley.
The tree was designed by Tonkin Liu and is constructed out of galvanised steel pipes in the shape of a tree bending in the wind. It is constructed in such a way that regardless of wind direction, the passing airs catch in the tubes and create a low pitched tune. The volume of which goes up and down depending on wind strenth.
In 2007 it won the National Award for architectural excellence by the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Dave was impressed.
