Burntisland Highland Games

Let me be your guide as we go round the Burntisland Highland Games.

An overview of the games arena. Scotland's second oldest games, the Burntisland Highland Games have been held annually since 1652. All the usual heavy events and highland dancing contests are held but they are no solo or pipe band competitions and lots of track events for runners and cyclists as well as a huge funfair which is much more popular than the main games, so more of a mainsream event than many of the more specialist games.

Burntisland is across the Firth of Forth from Edinburgh. This is a panoramic view of Edinburgh from Burntisland. Burntisland was very busy and I think many of those present were day trippers from Edinburgh.

The games are held on Burntisland Links, an area of parkland separated from the beach by the railway line. A series of underpasses give access to the award winning beach.

This 56 pound weight would easily have cleared the 15 foot bar if it had not hit the bar on its way up!

The end of a perfect throw. The thrower on left got the caber to turn the full 180 degrees and land in the twelve o'clock position and now it begins to topple.

The running events also include a hill race up to the top of The Binn, seen here behind the town, and back to the arena.

I have driven through Burntisland several times en-route from Edinburgh to St.Andrews or Kellie Castle, but one thing always puzzles me: is the town called Burnt-island or Burntis-land?

I used to go through Burntisland many times on the train but never got off.

Great pictures, Alex,of a part of Scotland I know nothing about.I cannot help but say,the gentleman wearing the Panama hat looks just the ticket.A perfect combination of,sun(in Scotland?),kilt and elegance.
