Just two pics but had to share: 
. . . brought back from The Gathering! I didn't take the dare, but those who did said the chips just tasted of chips (aka crisps on the other side of the Atlantic). I do wonder how one "naturally grows" a haggis. . .
Bob was the only kilted adult, uber-casual in black denim FlamingoKilt: 
A couple showed up later with their child in a tartan kilt but I didn't think to get a picture (I was well into the Murphy's by that point). One of the few SoCal beaches that still allows liquor, only restriction is that it must be in plastic or cans, no glass. Perhaps the fact that the lifeguards wear sidearms helps keep the riffraff under control  
The picnic is an annual event held on the lovely beach at Camp Pendleton, locale courtesy of a Clan member who is retired Lt Col (IIRC). BBQ, potluck table, and lots of cameraderie. Not sure why the other fellows show up in je@ns, maybe if we keep representing the trend will spread -- one fellow said he had worn his Utilikilt to previous events, prior to our joining the group, but "got tired of being the only man on the beach in a skirt" LOL

Bob looking very happy and very sharp in the black Flamingo kilt, he makes a great advert for the brand.

Haggis chips what a hoot! It always amazes me too, at our Clan outings, picnics, etc. the kilts are left at home.
I think part of it is 'most' have spent a small fortune on their 8 yarder and don't want to risk getting it messed up. Also, many just view their kilt as fancy dress wear. Times are changing, but many have alot of catching up to do!
Glad my fellow Donnachaidhs had a great time!

Maybe next year there will be more kilts. Glad to hear you two had a good time.
I agree with Mael. IF all you own is an eight yard tank, you are not to keen on taking it to the beach.

I agree that an 8 yard tank that costs dearly isn't the best choice of wear to a picnic at the beach. This is just another reason for casual kilts (read Flamingokilts) so that you can be kilted but not worry about ruining your clan tartan. It was a great picnic and a beautiful day at Del Mar beach at Pendleton. A long way from practicing amphibious landings a little further north.
