DIY Lochaber Axe
I had no work today so I finally got around to doing a project I've been planning on doing for awhile. A Lochaber axe! Thanks to the guides and photos in this thread, I made my own with a large dowel, some aluminum, and a few screws and nuts. The whole thing cost me about $20 and took me an hour to finish.
Keep in mind I have NO metalworking experience and was doing most of this freehand with just some photos as a guide.

What do you think?

Careful Greg. Now you have a taste and it won't be long before you want steel.
Great project!

Yeah, next would be steel, but if I tried that I don't think I'd be satisfied unless I used a forge!

I think my question is why. And "why not" doesen't count.

Creative, Greg. Good for you.

You know Frank I had a good friend ask something similiar about the 7 foot long spear I had just hung on my library wall over the window.
I don't think there is a logical answer beyond "some things are just cool to make and have".
Greg,
It looks like it turned out nicely, though I might suggest staining the handle.
Cheers

I've always been a creative person and if I go too long without building, sculpting, molding, photographing, painting, assembling, forming, or modifying something I get grumpy.
