    Duns Law and Duns Castle

Currently I have a contract to transport some handicapped people to and from a day centre in the Berwickshire town of Duns twice per week. If the weather is kind there are some good walks to be taken in the surrounding countryside while passing several hours before collecting my passengers for their return trip. This is a view of Duns from Duns Law.

Duns Law was the site of a Roman fort and here I am wearing my navy blue 21st Century Kilt on the earthworks of the Roman Ramparts.

Duns Law was also the site of a Covenanters' Encampment led by Sir Alexander Leslie in 1639 and the Covenanters' Stone marks the site.

The cairn marks the birthplace of John Duns Scotus, Doctor and Philosopher, who was born here in 1266. He travelled widely as a Member of the Franciscan Order and the cairn was erected by the Franciscan Order in 1966 to mark the seven hundredth anniversary of his birth. The building in the background is the Pavilion Lodge, built in the seventeen seventies and the arch forms one of the entrances to the courtyard of Duns Castle.

The oldest part of Duns Castle is the Pele Tower which dates from 1320. The earlier house was extended into a Gothic castle between 1818 and 1822, by architect James Gillespie Graham. The current Laird is Alexander Hay of Duns and Drumelzier.

Concluding with a shot taken beside the Hen Poo' which is a man made lake within the castle grounds, in which the TFCK Lightning Bolt kilt pin catches the sun.

As always, you pictures are stunningly beautiful.

I wish we had castles in my country.

Great pictures as usual, Alex, and a most informative commentary.
