    Fatlips Castle

Atop the wooded Minto Crags on the estate of the Earl of Minto, and seven miles from my home here in Hawick stands this 16th century tower house.

A strenuous climb up a steep and rough footpath through the woods is the only access.

Now we can see the towerhouse at close quarters.

Let us enter at our own risk.

The ground floor cellars and kitchen area are very dark so we proceed up the spiral staircase to the Laird's Hall where we see the grand fireplace.

Looking up from the floor of the Laird's Hall we can see that the roof timbers have suffered the ravages of time. Note access from spiral staircase to what would have been an upper floor.

Standing by a north facing window in the Laird's Hall

Another view of the Laird's Hall

Climbing the spiral staircase we can look back down through the access seen earlier into the Laird's Hall.

Now we have reached the top of the turret, we see another fireplace, where there would have been a bedroom.

Stepping out onto the parapet is not for the faint hearted.

But what a braw view, looking north towards the Eildon Hills.

Oklahoma? I've been thinking about a little getaway place up in Wisconsin...this sort of thing would be ideal.

It would certainly shut most of my architect friends up...

Wow! that was a cool tour. I'm glad I don't live around those sorts of things. I was sitting here thinking that I could put in huge skylights and clear floors to get more light in to the lower floors. Hmmm....How does one finance a fortified house. O'Neille
Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear; seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. --William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar

I have always loved the look of tower houses. Fantastic pictures you took. I hope you don't mind, but I am thinking of using the second one as the wallpaper on my computer for a bit.
