    Fort George, Ardsersier, Inverness

some 5 miles away from Drumossie Moor, Culloden is one of the most outstanding fortifications to be found in Europe, built in the wake of the 45 Jacobite rebellion as part of a concentrated effort by George II's government to ensure that the Highland clans would never rise again in support of the rightfull Royal dynasty the Stuarts.
Construction started 2 years after Culloden and took 21 years to complete at a cost more than twice the estimated budget about £20 million in todays money, the fort covered an area of 42 acres (17ha) with the main rampart being over 1km long, 3 sides faced out onto the Moray Firth and 1 side inland.

Fort George is still a military base today, and houses a regimental museum, today the Black Watch are in residence.

I took a few photo's, these give you just a taste of the awesome fortification

Across the Principle bridge to the main entrance

    The Principle ditch

    Vaulted arches outside the Guardroom

    Looking back at the Guardhouses

Sentry box on the outer wall

Cannon that never fired a shot in anger

Well worth a visit in my opinion, if only to see how scatologically scared the government was of another Jacobite rising, for further info see http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/nairn/fortgeorge/

Wow. Awesome is precisely the right word. It certainly looks like its presence would have been effective in communicating the intended message.

    Thumbs up yESTERDAYS

Thank you for posting the Ft George pictures, they reminded me of my younger days of army service. I smoked many a forbidden fag, in the wee small oors, while on stag. You made my day.

Thanks for the pics, its been five years since I last visited Fort George.
Many of the original buildings including barrack blocks are still in use.

Near the outer end of the fort 2004.

Looking back towards the entrance 2004.

When you see an aerial shot the geometry is quite amazing.
