some 5 miles away from Drumossie Moor, Culloden is one of the most outstanding fortifications to be found in Europe, built in the wake of the 45 Jacobite rebellion as part of a concentrated effort by George II's government to ensure that the Highland clans would never rise again in support of the rightfull Royal dynasty the Stuarts.
Construction started 2 years after Culloden and took 21 years to complete at a cost more than twice the estimated budget about £20 million in todays money, the fort covered an area of 42 acres (17ha) with the main rampart being over 1km long, 3 sides faced out onto the Moray Firth and 1 side inland.

Fort George is still a military base today, and houses a regimental museum, today the Black Watch are in residence.

Thank you for posting the Ft George pictures, they reminded me of my younger days of army service. I smoked many a forbidden fag, in the wee small oors, while on stag. You made my day.

IIRC the Regimental Museum is the Highlanders (Queen's Own side)

Thanks for the pics, its been five years since I last visited Fort George.
Many of the original buildings including barrack blocks are still in use.
