Fulton Castle and the Queen's Ride

William of Rule was granted the name Turnbull when he turned the head of a bull away from Robert the Bruce thus saving his life. The Turnbulls spread thereafter along the valleys of the Rule Water and the River Teviot and one of the properties which became a Turnbull stronghold through marriage was Fulton Castle. Seen here in its isolated and lonely surroundings yet when I bring the photo up on the computer two mysterious children can be seen in the castle.

The castle is said to have been devastated by the Earl of Hertford's forces in 1545, yet it was possibly at least partly restored and occupied until a further attack by the English in 1571 as it is known that Mary Queen of Scots passed this way on her ride from Jedburgh to visit the wounded Bothwell at Hermitage on 15th October 1566. Here a one hundred and fifty strong cavalcade of horse riders follows the route of the Queen's Ride over the hills from Jedburgh towards Fulton Castle.

The horses are led by the Jedburgh Callant.

Now the riders have arrived at the castle and the horses are permitted to graze in the field surrounding the castle.

Great pictures Alex!! I must show a pair of friends of mine who raise horses. Both of thier families are from Scotland and I think they would love to visit during riding season.
Thanks again,
Sara
