Well spotted. I did a blow up of the other picture in which he appears and it does indeed appear that at least some of his pleats are basted together along the bottom. As he is a heavies competitor I assume he is aware of the intended purpose of basting stitches but has chosen to leave some in as a matter of personal choice.
