    Hiking on Antelope Island

Just spent the afternoon hiking with a bunch of Venture Scouts on Antelope Island. Antelope is the largest Island on the Great Salt lake (Utah). An incredably beautiful place, we saw lots of American Bison, Plus Mule deer and a few Jack rabbits.

    Fun hiking clothes

Your field gear looks sharp and comfortable! I'll have to consider really carefully whether I'll be able to pull that off around here on trails in southeast Ohio...we've got abundant poison ivy everywhere, and lots of greenbriers (with thorns) and sticktights and other stuff. Eh, maybe I'll just do it anyway and deal with the consequences later!

Out in the TX Bushes we get what we call goat heads. The spines on these things are so sharp and troublesome, I had to use pliers to get them out of my socks and laces, because they hurt like hell wherever they'd stick my fingertips!

And yes in deedy, he does look sharp!

Great look. We have an Antelope Island down here too. Its in Lake Powell - but no where near the grandure of Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. No bison. A few eagles winter there.

    Hi Matty,

Beautiful scenery. I was wondering about the bison. Were they introduced or an indigenous species? The reason I ask, is that I can't make out from Google maps whether Antelope Island is joined to the mainland at the southern end.

    Regards

I'd love to know the answer to the bison question as well. Also, is there any potable surface water on this island? Considering it's surroundings, I'm guessing not.

The Bison were Introduced in 1893 and has always been a managed herd. Antelope Island is connected to the mainland by a seven mile, man made Causeway.

Thanks for the follow-up Matty. I always find it interesting to learn about places that I am probably never going to have the chance to visit.
