    Hume Castle

There has been a castle on this site since the 13th century, and was once a stronghold of the Hume family.

What we see today has the appearance of a French Napoleonic Castle rather than the traditional Scottish castle we might expect to find.

This is because the original castle which stood on this rocky outcrop was mostly demolished by Cromwell's English Army in 1651.

But let us go up and take a closer look for ourselves.

The walls we see today were constructed by the Earl of Marchmont between 1770 and 1789 along the original castle's boundaries, but inside there are still some remains of the original castle.

Here I am within the castle walls.

    The Well

Some traces of the original castle.

Part of the original 13th century castle.

    Hume village from the castle.

A braw view from the lookout post, to the west towards the Eildon Hills.
The three people approaching from the car park had come all the way from Sydney, Australia, to tour some of Scotland's castles.

Of course the lookout tower also gave a view towards England, but the sun wasn't in the right place to show this to best advantage.

Great pics. The number of historical sites in Scotland alone is incredible.

I feel so culturally deprived here in California after seeing these pictures. Of course there are many beautiful things here in California...take my future wife for instance ;-)
