Kilt under construction in Monument Valley
I'm traveling in the Four Corners area for a week or so, and I have a kilt with me that I'm working on for an XMarker. I promised him that I would post a picture of his kilt "under construction" at some swell place out here, so here it is in Monument Valley!

and a bit closer up. Ancient MacRae, in case you're wondering...

Been working on the kilt as we've been driving from place to place. I have a graduate student from Egypt who is working with me this summer, and she's never been to the US before. We're taking a week to show her some of the fabulous Southwest US - we've been to the Grand Canyon North Rim, Monument Valley, and Lake Powell, and we did a fabulous day-long raft trip on the San Juan River yesterday from Bluff to Mexican Hat. Today we're headed up to Silverton, Colorado for a couple of days - she'll get a chance to see some more great geology and also snow for the first time in her life!

Barb, it's always great to see photos of you working on kilts during your journeys. I'm sure the new owner of this kilt will appriciate your photos as much as I did when you took photos of mine.

Stormed through the canyonlands eh? Always 2% who never get the word. If you go over the pass into Ouray you might consider soaking at Orvis Hot Springs in Ridgway - black silky lithium infused waters are sooooo relaxing...its an old hippie dip. And the brewery in Ridgway flys the Saltire flag. And so does whoever lives in the first house on the east side of the far south end of Ouray....sometimes. And the pub in Ouray (O'Brians I think) has the no kilt service sign. Enjoy your trip.

Not sure what you mean by your first comment about storming through the canyonlands and being part of the 2% who are clueless. I have spent many days in the desert Southwest, and it was actually hard to decide where to take our guest given the facts that we had only a few days and that she wanted to visit the Grand Canyon. We actually stayed over night at Monument Valley and spent an entire day there, so we didn't exactly blow through. I wish we could have spent time up around Moab, but I thought an all-day raft trip was a better use of our time.
Silverton is a place that I know really well. I've spent 6 or 7 summers mapping in the Weminuche Wilderness, and one summer mapping in Uncompahgre Canyon between Red Mountain Pass and Ouray. Very familiar with the hot springs in Ouray.

"storming through" = visiting a lot of spots over great distances.
"2% who don't get the word" = ME....someone mentioned you were in the area on another thread - I had no clue.
Raft trip an excellent choice for sure - someday I'll do that one. Meantime I'm still addicted to Glen Canyon.
Them mountains are the ones I worked inside of in the old Idarado Mine. Used to live in Ouray. If it weren't for Winters I'd probably still be living there.
Just about became a geologist myself from that experience. My late uncle Burke Maxey has a geology building named after him at U of Nevada. He was a geology professor who encouraged me. I was just too young to "get it."
Since you know the area so well, know you'll have a great trip.

Your kilts are a monument to fine craftsmanship and so this is extra-appropriate. Great stuff as always.
