| | | Kilted Classroom
I finally wore my kilts to school. I drove up to the faculty parking lot Wed. last week and sat there collecting myself before running the gauntlet of students as I headed to my classroom. I decided to be kilted last Wed., Thurs., and Fri. I got ALL of the usual comments and even a couple of wolf whistles but decided not to comment to students in the hall. I gave a brief lecture on the kilt and reminded my students that "Women wear skirts, BUT real men wear kilts." I sold tickets at the basketball games Friday night, and got super great compliments from the parents and some dads even said," I gotta get me one of those I'm a Stewart or McDonald etc." It was a special three days in class. I did not get any in my SWK Lamont that I wore on Friday but here are the Black Watch and the MacLaren(I've had the tie for quite a while. I told my students that Fridays will now be my kilt days instead of dress down with jeans and cowboy boots. Can't wait for Friday.

Most cool. I love the "sporran free" look.
Every semester I'm asked over to the high school to teach six different classes about how alcohol and drugs effect the human body. Been going kilted the last few years. Don't ever recall one rude remark.
And surprisingly, the nicest compliments seem to come from the roughest looking older male students.
Kilts in school teach freedom and tolerance. Way to go!!

McNulty,
You look fabulous!!!! You are also braver than I am, at least so far.
So what do you teach?
I'm a teacher too! However, rather than a comprehensive High School, I teach Sciences at an Alternative (Continuation) High School with a primarily Hispanic demographic. I'm not sure that my students could get over the shock of seeing me in a Kilt!
Cheers,
Marshal Moroni

I teach English I and II, High School Reading for our growing Latino population( currently at 42-43% of the student body) and Creative Writing to upper classmen.

Not really that much braver. The Latino population was... was not sure what to make of the "Anglo" in the skirt. After the word got around school that I was kilted and after talking to quite a few of the classes, and making myself more than visible out in the halls, gradual acceptance was accomplished. By Friday, the uniqueness sorta wore off and they started asking more and more questions about my heritage. It became a cool way to share. A couple of the Latino students told me that they had a mixed heritage and that some of their relatives were Scotch-Irish.

I am a religion instructor for my church. I have always been kilted. I have been used by other instructors for diversity training. It all works well. To my students the kilt is a part of my identity.

The first time I wore a kilt to school one of the girl's yelled out "Put on some pants!" The kids are used to me now and I get a lot of compliments. Having a 6'4" rugby sized colleague who wears a leather kilt on Fridays helps immeasurably too.!
