Talking Kilted At A Martial Arts Seminar

My "oldest surviving student" in the Bujinkan, Mike Simien, is up from Brazil (moved there 5 years or so ago) and taught an outdoor seminar in Fremont on Saturday. He now is, like me, maxed out on rank in the Bujinkan; and he's the highest-level instructor in his adoptive country. I attended mainly to see him and wasn't planning on really training, so I didn't "suit up" and just wore my "weekend clothes".

Predictably though, I couldn't just sit through the whole thing and found myself jumping in occasionally to help clarify things some people were having difficulties with. Here's a "public" link to the photo album; Mike's the one standing with me in the first photo:

The kilt is by Matt Newsome, in 16-oz. Douglas Weathered tartan.

    5yd?, 6yd?

I think that Matt's low-yardage HW knife-pleats are really exceptional kilts.

6yd, and I agree -- really exceptional. I commissioned two which arrived about 3 weeks ago, the other is in Douglas Modern. Just to give some credit to other vendors represented here, I'm also wearing a dark-blue Ryan Ross handknit bonnet and a black Ferguson Britt "Duin uasal" sporran.

Oh, and "Bison" Lewis hose with Ancient Blue garter ties.

Great photos, Dale! I love seeing my kilts worn in unusual contexts!

First off, I sent you a friend request- RS Leather. Second, I did something similar a year ago. Good for you! I know nothing about that style. I study Shotokan and hakoryu (or however the heck it's spelled!) jujitsu. Can you tell me a little about your style?

Got it this morning, we be's friends now.

I've trained in a feileadh mor too, both empty-hand and with sharp pointy things like dirk and broadsword. I think it's important to have a good sense of how what you're wearing will affect your movement.

Shotokan is the first art I ever formally trained in, just out of high school. I'm somewhat familiar with Hakko ryu too: Like Aikido it's largely developed from Daito ryu aikijutsu; but it seems to have retained more of its "teeth" in the process. I've been in the Bujinkan for 27 & 1/2 years now and am one of the first 20 Americans to have become an instructor; for an overview read through the FAQ at http://bujinkansf.org/.

My instructor says the same thing. He let's us train in street clothes once a month, but otherwise is very strict about the uniform.

The way my instructor teaches both arts, they have big, sharp teeth! His philosophy is that if it won't help you in a street fight, then it's worthless. He actually adds a lot of kung fu into the shotokan to make it more fluid.

And thanks for the link! I'll be looking at it closely.

Stay tuned, Nighthawk: I may be visiting my parents at Highlands Ranch for a few days in mid-August, and just coincidentally (not!) taking them and my brother to the Rocky Mountain Highland Games.
