Kilts in Edinburgh

My first visit to Edinburgh since the gathering.

Friend Alan in casual wear.

Plenty of young guys out and about in kilts. Here two modern men pose for the camera while the fair haired chap in the black watch kilt has not spotted the camera but his lass obviously has.

The entrance to the High Court has become a popular pitch for a piper in the early evening after Court has risen for the day.

Another piper outside the High Court

The traditional piper at the corner of Princes Street and Waverley Bridge near the Scott Monument has moved across to the other side of the road due to the tram works blocking his usual position.

Another piper at the corner of Waverley Bridge/Princes Street

Some of the tourist tat shops make a poor job of dressing their mannequins, this kilt is worn back to front.

You would have thought that on Princes Street they could have done better than display a mannequin with a broken nose and a broken upper lip. Note also the mannequin has at least five feathers in his cap.
More to follow shortly

Great pics... they describe Edinburgh's kilt scene pretty much!
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Tram lines being laid along Princes Street adjacent to the Scott Monument.

On the Castle Esplanade in front of Edinburgh Castle.

Mary King's Close.
When the Edinburgh Exchange, which later became the City Chambers was built in 1753 the thick walls of the lower floors of the tenements in the old closes were used as foundations for the new building, leaving the old houses and closes hidden below the new building which stretches down the slope from the Royal Mile to Cockburn Street.
The undercroft of the City Chambers is now opened up to tourism and it is possible to take a guided tour of these relics of a bygone age, led by a guide in period costume.
Personal photography is not allowed but they do provide a souvenir group shot, taken by an infrared camera which looks up Mary King's Close towards the Royal Mile.
That's all folks.

It is interesting to note that among the younger set, that the gent with some altitude has the neatest position of his kilt- - Just at the top of the knee. He looks the best proportioned of the group. The view of kilted men has not changed much from my visit in the mid sixties. Still at the knee, and most of the time casual, with crew socks and black shoes. With all that has happened to the fashion of wearing trousers and jeans, it is nice to see the kilt's fashion has not really changed much at all. Thank you for the pictures, and letting me relive an earlier time when I was one of the young kilted set so long ago....

That first shot looks like the bus station. I take it has re-opened again after the flooding. Like you I don't think I've been in Edinburgh since the Gathering either - and I live in the place! It really is an awful mess these days and those tourist tat shops don't help either. Gold Bros have a lot to answer for.
