Lindisfarne, the Holy Island

In 634AD King Oswald granted the island of Lindisfarne to Saint Aidan, with a view to bringing Christianity to the north-east of England.

Two churches were founded, St. Peters Priory which is now a ruin, and

St. Mary's where worship is still held three times daily.

Stained glass in St. Mary's Chapel.

There is also a fine Norman Castle on the island, perched atop a rocky outcrop.

On the ascent to the castle.
Kilt is Weathered MacKenzie tartan

A closer view of the castle

All too soon it was time to cross the causeway back to the English mainland as the tide was coming in and darkness would soon fall.

Absolutely gorgeous! I have never been there, but when I am in Britain next summer, I shall make every attempt to do so! Just lovely, Alex (love the Rover too)!

Truly beautiful, Alex. I had not realised just how close it was to Hawich. I think I will have to make a diversion next time I am up.

Yes the causeway is covered by water almost half of the time.

Not really. It's just a wet road which dries out quite quickly in sunny weather but just remains wet when it's raining
I've travelled across to the island on several occasions and never had any problems at all
