Talking Meeting My New Grandson - Christmas Day 2010

On Christmas day of this year I got to meet me 1st grandchild/son!

His name is Koda which means "friend" in the Lakota Sioux dialect (my son, Patrick, is very much into his Cherokee/Native American heritage, unlike the ol' man who is very much into his Scots/Celtic heritage
While my paternal grandmother Scobee was approx 1/16th Cherokee, Patrick's maternal grandfather was a 1/2 blood Cherokee).

Anyhow, here are a few images from Christmas Day taken at my Mom's humble abode

First meeting of Grandpa & Baby Koda:

My 11 yr old "Aunt" Shannon w/ Koda:

Koda was a month & half (more or less) when these were taken (his having been born November 9th).

    With my son Patrick:

...it has been 3 years since I last saw Patrick:

...he wasn't too sure about my wearing of the kilt, and he's not to keen on the idea of us making a Macdonell of Keppoch kilt for Koda (as my sister said: "it'll be easier to change diapers!" ), but the ol' man will wear him down eventually!

That's a good-looking grandson you have there. I see the pride in your eyes, and in his father's eyes, too. I'm glad you got to be together for Christmas.

Jim, my son Patrick has come a long way in his life. He battled a long addiction in his early life (he's 26 now) with drugs & alcohol. There was a time he lived on the streets (when he wasn't in jail). I tried to help him, but in the end learned that we cannot assist anyone who doesn't first wish to help themselves / or accept the help offered.
As a father, it was a tough lesson to learn. All I could ever do was try & provide a good example.

I'm thankful though that Patrick has pulled himself up out of the gutter, has been drug/alcohol clean for about 6 or 7 years now, and has turned into a fine man (& has given me a fine wee grandson!).

Aye, you can be proud of your son's overcoming his addiction and now a handsome wee lad of a grandson.

    Gle Mhath Terry

Glad you held your grandson on first meeting in your kilt. I did the same with my granddaugther and love those photos/memories. I think imprinting their little brains with Celtic thoughts will be important down the road. I also think the Celts and Native Americans have a lot in common celebrating nature. This will be a good combination for this wee little bairn.

PS hint he won't be ready for a swing set for a few months so stick with rattles and such for a while.
