My Great Grandfathers family-take a look

Here is a picture of my Great GrandDads family taken in Kansas in the mid-1880's. My Grand Dad is the oldest boy.

After some investigation I noticed that Great Uncle Forrest is wearing what type of clothe???

Great picture, I love looking into family history

Dude, that's so awesome! I have to raid my folks photo collection and see what hidden treasures might lie in them. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, great uncle Forrest is wearing a frock, which was very common during the late Victorian Period. What I found interesting was the tartan clothe. Need to get Matt N. to take a look and see what he has to say about it.

It an amazing thing isn't it, looking at photos of your family but a hundred years or so ago? I've got an oldy with my great grandmother as a wee girl with her mum and dad and all the kids, at least 8 or 9 of them. I'll try to find it, it's a trip. Stirs the blood just a little huh?
    Cheers,

Great old picture of great grandfather; and sharp eyed to spot the tartan plaid on your uncle.

It is not really possible to get a good ID on a tartan in a picture like this due both to it being in black and white, and also because there is not a whole lot of detail of the tartan showing.

But, if I had to make a guess -- and that is all it is, my best guess -- I would suggest the Louise tartan, designed in 1871 for the marriage of Princess Louise to the Marquiss of Lorne.

    My best guess,
    Matt

Taking a second look, I don't think it's the Princess Lousie tartan. Probably a fashion tartan (unnamed).

Too bad the frock is not still in the family!
