Just finished the sheaths for these two sgian dhus I made for two of my groomsmen. The blades are forged from high-quality hockey skate blades, the roughness was left in the center intentionally. The handles are whitetail deer antler. They are not drilled all the way through, and the blades are inset slightly. The extra width of the hole was filled with dental acryllic to finish it. Also notice the small ricosso at the bottom of the blades, something not normally found on sgians.
Both handles have similar curves.
And here's the dirk I'm making for myself, forged from a 7" piece of 3/4" roundstock. The handle needs the finishing work and then a finish applied.
I've been going nuts getting things done for the wedding, but I'm getting to the point that things are finally starting to be completed. But I've still got a few things to start yet! Three weeks and counting!

First class work there! Having used a typical sgian enough to know better, I think the ricosso you added is a very good idea indeed.
I really like the handle on your dirk. Don't forget to post a photo of the finished piece. (surely the wedding planning isn't taking up all your time )

Very nice.
Like the idea of recycled hockey skate blades....but I did get a flash of hockey players carrying knives in their sox....

Nick, very nice work. How are you finding time to do thes while getting ready for your wedding? Then again, the only thing my wife let me do for our wedding was get fitted for my tux (wasn't kilted back then). So maybe you do have some spare time....

Amazing, talented people on this board. Amazing. Well done Nick.
I'm not too fond of the horn handles for myself, but the craftsmanship is obvious. Your groomsmen should be overhelmed.

So maybe you do have some spare time.... | This is all part of the wedding planning, and just a few of the things I'm making. I've also made: the cake service and knife, an iron rose for her boquet, pins for all my groomsmen, another pin for one of my groomsmen that's wearing a greatkilt, necklaces for all the bridesmaids, three gold chains for her dress, and the pin for my plaid. Still to be finished (some aren't yet started) my plaid, my jacket, the dirk and sheath, two wee greatkilts for the ringbearers, my jabot and cuffs, and stands for the wedding cake. There may be other things, but I can't think of any at the moment.
Mbhandy, the handle is Michigan Walnut, it's a beautiful wood. I'm not staining it, but I have finished it with what is baisically the same thing they put on gym floors. Sounds odd, but it's an incredible wood finish when properly applied. It's darkened the wood to an extenet, it's strong, and makes the wood look almost like tigereye. I'll post progress and finished pics when I finish the sheath, I just ordered the dye and leather finish today.
Cheers,
Nick
