Pictures of Stirling Town #2

This church was apparently formed by a breakaway minister of the Church of Scotland and that's his "modest" tomb in front...

The spired church in the town centre with the statue of Wallace in front (close up posted on another thread).

Looking up to the spired church and the statue from outside one of the entrances to the Thistle Centre.

A pedestrianised Stirling street.

The view from Stirling railway station before we took the train (and bus due to engineering works then train again) to Edinburgh.

If you are visiting Stirling I can recommend this interesting shop which is exactly opposite the railway station. Run by very friendly people and they have all kinds of interesting things regarding kilts, accessories and souvenirs in stock. Reasonable prices too.

These and other pictures can also be seen at www.fotothing.com/cleftref

Thanks a lot, McClef. The photos you guys post help those of us who aren't in Scotland right now. And, the tourist bureau will thank you when it makes us come sooner than we planned.

Ahhh, these pics of Stirling toon make me "homesick".

I canny recall, was the pedestrianized street Port Street? When I was last across, they were still working on it and it was a madhouse.

I was always surprised to find the Scottish Connection empty. With its proximity to the station, one would imagine it to be full of visitors. For those yet to visit Stirling, McClef's view up Station Road to Murray Place and the Scottish Connection are the first things you see as you come out of the station.

Excuse me whilst I try to find the funds to start planning my next trip...

I regret that although the name sounds familiar I cannot confirm that it's Port St, Mike.

It's the street you arrive at having walked down from the Castle so that the Wallace statue is on your left and facing you is an entrance to the Thistle Centre Mall.

Yes the Scottish Connection was empty apart from myself, Andrew and the proprietors. I concluded it must be something to do with the time of year as Stirling had much fewer visitors than Edinburgh did and it's in quite a good location. I think some people could mistake it for a pub from the outside - I had to cross the road before I could see items in the window to the right!

Yet I didn't see any other shops of that type in Stirling, unlike Edinburgh!

I bought a piper figure there to inspire me with my piping goals!

LOL, that one changes names a half-dozen times, between the Castle and Thistle Centre. Ballengeich Road becomes Ballengeich Pass, then Upper Castlehill, then Castle Wynd, then St. John Street, then Spittal Street and then finally it becomes King Street, before it intersects with Murray Place, in front of the Thistle Centre. There is where I was confused. If you had turned to the left, to go back to the train station, that is Murray Place, but had you turned to the right, that is Port Street. And I think that section of Port was already pedestrianized.

Och aye, you didn't get off the beaten path enough. Had you turned to the right on Goosecroft and walked to the point at Barnton Street, you would have found a couple of shops. There are a couple more shops over on Baker Street, where it parallels Spittal, if memory serves.
