Smailholm Tower

Court finished early this afternoon so I decided to visit Smailholm Tower on my way home. This is a 15th century stronghold of the Pringles, which was sold to the Scotts in the 17th century. Both family names are still common around here.

It's a fair wee hike up from the car park to the tower

Off with the gown and jacket but still wearing my court kilt and shoes - the kilt was fine but boots would have given a much better grip for hiking.

A few more photos from the surrounding crags before I went inside.

Inside the tower there are displays on each floor.

The climb up to the parapet is worth it for the braw views.
The pond is choked with aquatic plants at this time of year.

View from the parapet back towards the car park.

Smailholm Tower
hae far frae Dumfries is it?
Dumfries to Hawick via Lockerbie & Langholm = 53 miles; Hawick to Cleikimin via A698 = 10 miles; Cleikimin to St. Boswells on A68 = 8 miles; turn right at St. Boswells Village Green onto the B6404. After 2 miles is the turn off for Dryburgh Abbey; then its about another 2 miles to the turn off onto the narrow road up to Smailholm Tower, so about 75 miles from Dumfries; easily possible for a day out from Ferintosh and can be combined with a visit to Dryburgh Abbey.

Excellent images, thank you!
I saw (on another forum) some images that a fellow had posted from Callander, over the weekend. And it immediately had me looking at travel sites, pricing airline fares. I've been back Stateside for four whole weeks, how long is a guy expected to hold out?

More great pics. Looks like that was a nice hike up with a beautiful view as your reward.

I love the pics! I see all the pics P1M, Ham etc post on here, of all of the castles and towers, and I get envious of not being able to visit them, other than through pics. One day!
If yer happy and you know it, raise yer kilt!
