Toast to Burns in Fredericksburg VA

We had a grand time at the excellent new pub "the Fredericksburg Pub" in F'burg VA to join in the Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns' 250th birthday anniversary, tonight 25 Jan.

Xmarkers present: Meinfs, Mael Coluim and Kerr The Walker.

We were joined by a fraction of the kilted!! staff at the Fredericksburg Pub:

Mael informs the F'burg Pub crew that they've become part of the Worldwide Toast to Robert Burns night.

According to Kerr and Mael, The Fredericksburg Pub has an excellent selection of single malt whiskys.

This night was extra special for me, meinfs, because - it was my first Burns night, albeit an informal, ad hoc one, just a few Xmarkers meeting up at a pub (even if it was 60 mi away for me). And it was my first chance to taste a single malt whisky - a dram of Macallan 12 yrs, courtesy of the gentleman from Spotsylvania, Mael Coluim. Thanks Mael!

I had an on-the-spot education in the partaking of fine single malt whisky from experts Mael and Robert. Here's what I learned: that I enjoyed the Macallan at full strength! No dilution. I always heard that single-malts are an "acquired taste." Well I acquired it all right and I'm pleasantly surprised that I took to it rather nicely that night! I loved it -potent stuff.

So here it is:
Mael and Meinfs with whisky expert Robert from Florida who's in town to train the F'burg Pub's staff.

I had a Guiness, a Belhaven Scottish ale and Macallan 12 yrs. An excellent evening and experience for me. I would highly recommend the Fredericksburg Pub as a venue for VA/DC/MD kilt nights. The place was hopping for a Sunday evening. I learned that the bar - beautiful woods were obtained from wood from Pubs that had closed in the UK. Will you chime in on this one Mael?

Mael and Kerr, will you inform the rabble of the tartans that you were wearing that night? And add in the little stories of how the place and its patrons really took notice of your kilts, and this despite all of the staff wearing kilts. Mine was my first DIY kilt, a handsewn(!) denim kilt - which got a few compliments as well!

Overall, Kerr, Mael and Meinfs had a great evening visiting and sharing XMTS thoughts and stories (including off-topics e.g. Battlestar Galactica! lol)

Definitely a good time. It was very surprising how packed it was for a Sunday evening. Looking back, I wish I had stayed a bit longer (Macallan 12 is one of my favorites! ). Next time I think I'll make plans to crash locally instead of making the drive back north.

Even with all the staff kilted, we still turned some heads. Got a few comments, all positive.

As an added bonus, it was the first time here in the States that I found Belhaven on draught. Served a bit cold for my tastes, but nothing 10 minutes or so couldn't fix.

All in all, drinks were good, atmosphere great, and the company even better.

Slainte!

~Alex

sfcrick, thanks. It was a fun evening.

Robert, yes - I'm glad the pictures came out well. The place is modern (with LCD tv's and all) but has a good pub atmosphere and friendly staff, who seem at ease with their kilts).

Mipi - thank you. Ahh, the nice thing about a smaller gathering, you get to converse with each other more.

Alex, yes we hung out a little more and luckily for me, I got a taste of single-malt. We were thinking about you.

Oh and we missed you Fiddler Doyle, Friday and macdoc451 (get better soon!) and Reno, DLmiller,

Yes it was. Check out the flyer about the pub that Mael posted earlier.

The bar went around 360° but it wasn't round - it had a lot of angles which made for geometrically interesting social interactions among the patrons.

And then, of course, the kilted staff!! You feel right at home and only positive comments and looks.

It was a super evening! Really enjoyed meeting you guys. Looking forward to our next gathering. The Pub@Fredericksburg was a perfect location for a Kilt Night. the staff really took to us; after all we were all kilted brethen!

We did have many opportunities with the patrons to spread the word about the kilted life. I've posted our night with the World wide Toast to Robert Burns, so we have made our contribution. Thanks for coming 'down'!

I'm wearing my new USA Kilts traditional 5 yarder obtained thru Rocky's recent 'kilt clearence'. The tartan is Robertson red. I love it. I's saving up for couple more.

Great pix, Mein and super commentary. I really enjoyed our Scotch tasting and our conversation with Robert.

Al, great to meet you and your buds earlier in the evening. Hope that they can join us in the kitled life.

Wow, what a good looking crew (xmarkers included) It looks like a fine establishment, what more do you need good company single malt, and a kilt friendly venue. The staff look like they need some help on kilt length, the boys looked a little long, were the girls a little long too?
Seriously though they all looked great loved the pics. Thanks for sharing
