    Victoria, B.C. Burns Night

My wife and attended our third and final Burns Supper on Saturday night. It was a joint fundraiser for the Canadian Scottish Regiment Heritage Foundation and the Victoria Highland Games Association. There were around 80 attendees. The event began and ended in the Officers' Mess at the Bay Street Armoury (the bar has over 125 single malts to choose from) and the dinner was in the Currie Room. It was a fine night, with lots of piping, poetry, and good food and drink. We ran into some old friends and made some new ones. I have no pictures from the mess or dinner, but here are a few of the pipes and drums.

You can see the leftovers from the Paper Aeroplan Toss. I didn't win anything!

Here are few pictures of the Greater Victoria Police Pipe Band Burns Supper that was held the weekend previous.

The band is forming up to march in.

    Looking good David.
You certainly go in for Burns Suppers on a grand scale over there on the West Coast!

Great pictures! You look very well turned out ... but what is the tartan-clad imp on your left shoulder whispering to you?

Thanks, everybody. The imp is a piper nutcracker that my daughter gave me for my birthday just after Christmas, and I haven't had the heart to put him away with the Christmas decorations yet.

    Great photos!

What tartan does the Greater Victoria Police Pipe Band wear?

What's odd is that our pipe band, here in Southern California in 1986, chose to wear British Columbia tartan! We had to have a bolt woven for us, in kilt weight fabric, by Lochcarron, who at the time only wove it in necktie weight.

This caused confusion when we competed over in Scotland, as our bass drum said "Redlands CA" and the Scots thought that the CA stood for Canada. We're listed as being from Canada in the World Pipe Band Championships programme. Next time we went to Scotland we put the word California on the bass drum.
