    Vimy Ridge

We went to Arras in northern France to play golf for 2 days with friends.

Visited the Canadian war memorial near Vimy and I thought our Canadian XMarkers would appreciate to see some pictures of it.

    With respect...

    Very sobering.

Thank you very much Robin, those pictures give me goosebumps, even though my family was in Scotland at the time.

I was reading an article recently regarding this monument and Adolph Hitler. Apparently as despicable as he was, he honoured the sacrifices made in the great war whether friend or foe. He ordered that this monument not be damaged or defaced in any way and even posted SS guards to protect it through the entire Nazi occupation of France.

It is indeed a stoic and imposing monument.

I remember that monument well from when I lived in France. While the monument and others like it are a living memory of that time I felt the most telling memorials were the small cemeteries dotted all over the Somme and seemingly just around every corner.

With Memorial Day fast approaching here in the US it is not a bad thing to reflect on the sacrifices of others so that we can live in freedom.

    Thanks for the post.
