Walk up Sugarloaf Mountain

Yesterday Cassie and I went up Sugarloaf mountain, which is a little outside Marquette. Cassie insists it's not a mountain, but she grew up in Colorado. It only takes about a half hour to walk up to the top. Here's a veiw of Lake Superior and the shoreline

Here's a view of the city of Marquette. I know, it looks like there's nothing there. The two chimneys to the left are the Presque Isle power station. Almost in the center is the Superior Dome, the largest wooden dome in the world (there's a Japanese dome that claims the title as well, but the S.D. is larger by 3 cubic feet.), part of Northern Michigan University, and to the right of that is Marquette General Hospital, but most of the city is invisible.

This is the monument at the top of Sugarloaf, which was actually made by my great-grandfather. The stones were brought up by Boy Scout Troop 1, and he did the masonry. It was built in memorial of the troop scoutmaster, who was killed in France in 1918.

I'm wearing my green PK, I don't think I'll ever go on any hike, even one as short as this, wearing trousers if I can help it.

Great pics. BUT, I will have to agree with Cassie. I don't see any mountains in those pics, good sized ant hills but no mountains.

Come on out for a visit if you want to hike a mountain. There is a great trail from Manitou Springs to the top of Pike's Peak.

Perhaps Michigan has its own Ffynnon Garw. (See the movie "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain").

Great pics! Is Sugerloaf taller than Brockway? I always remember drive up Brockway Mtn. drive.. You feel like your driving to the sun!

I assume "PK" means "Pittsburgh Kilt?" Those are something that were gone before I got into kilting. Is that green denim? It's very nice.

Nice snaps, Nick. Great view and I like the provenance. Must feel very good to have such a sense of place there.

Speaking of Sugar Loaf, this is the one I thought of, probably because it's where I was raised.

Copacabana with the Sugar Loaf majestically in the background.

I didn't walk up though. This is how I used to go up to the top. (Note the guy standing ON TOP of the cable car!)

Would that be the Barr trail? Something like 8,000 vertical feet in what, 5 or 6 miles? When I was stationed at Ft. Carson, it was a preferred "extreme training" activity to hike up and down it in one day. Do they still do that?

Sugar Loaf must be a popular name - there is one here in Wales just outside Abergavenny and another one near Llandovery which has a small railway halt named after it!
