    A 22 yard kilt?!?!?!

The other day, while kilted, I had a gentleman come up to me and asked me about my kilt, and if I was Scottish ( he was, he claimed to be from the Highlands of Scotland). Anyway, I told him I was wearing a casual kilt, about 5 yards (USAK Philabeg). He was looking at my kilt trying to figure out the tartan. "Its a Scottish National" I told him. "So its a 5 yarder, ah?" he asked. "Yes", I replied. Well, Its not a full traditional 8 yards. After I said that, he looked at me like I was crazy. 8 yards? The traditional kilt is supposed to be 22 yards of cloth, he said. I asked him if he was sure what he was saying, and he got offended saying that he being from the Highlands would know more about the kilt than a non-scot like me. I left it at that. Can anyone verify this for me? I figured he was talking about the Great kily, but still, 22 yards?

22 feet - just over 7 yards. Probably just confused.

Next time that happens, explain that 22 yards is 66 feet. Then pace out about 66 feet of distance between you and the other person. And then ask him if he wants that much heavy wool wrapped around his body!

I has someone suggest to me once that a "true" great kilt was 30 yards long. I then told him that 30 yards equalled 90 feet. The largest mammal currently alive on the planet is the great blue whale, which at adult size can reach a length of 90 feet.

Honestly, where do these people think all that cloth goes???

    Matt,

You of all people should know.

A yard for the outer apron, a yard for the inner apron and 20 yards for the pleats.

With a pleat depth of 10 inches per pleat that makes 72 pleats. Each about 3/8" wide.

Hey, it could be done!!! ;-) ;-) ;-)
