| | | Am I Too Olde To Wear Utilikilts?
There was a time I owned 15 Utilikilts. I "outgrew" them and sold them so they'd have a life and not be closet queens.
But I didn't buy more Utilikilts. I figured I'm too olde. I'm currently a month shy of 66.
Now, I know Ham has some years on me and wears Utilikilts....but figured that's more for the Kilt Kollection.
Then last week on the UK Forum a 71 year old guy posted about being hit on by a 40 something year old lady while he was wearing a Utilikilt....so being single and currently lonely got to wondering if I'm missing something....maybe I'm wrong about olde gents and Utilikilts...???
Had my sights on a Mocha Survival II a while back but no one at UK answered the phone when I called during normal business hours. Got the hankerin' again but they're not currently available.
Which has caused me pause....and wonder again if an old guy just looks too weird or different in a Utilikilt...Looking for opinions here.
Can toss in my latest pic in a Utilikilt - was last month, but my brown leather UK which is different than the Survival. 
Maybe I should clarify - FAT olde man in a Utilikilt...

Anytime you have to ask the question, "Am I too old to..." the answer is probably "yes", in the same way "yes" is probably the honest answer to "Does this make me look fat?". Of course, very few people ever really want an honest opinion of anything, generally preferring to have others reinforce their own, preconceived, notions.
So, do you think you're too old for a UK? Well, you're the only one that can honestly answer that question.

You are on to something here, but I believe these questions have to do with confidence and not fashion.
I've seen large women (and men) who look fantastic in anything they put on, because they have their own style and wear their outfits with a confidence that shines through. Likewise, I've seen thin, fit individuals look as if they're wearing sacks even though the garments are VERY expensive. Posture, poise and confidence can make or break an outfit.

I've never seen you look anything but confident and happy in your pix. You're only too old for the Utilikilt IF you THINK you are.
The question IS, because you've asked the question "are you too old", are you too old?

You're too old if:
1) you think you are.
2) those around you, in any given situation, think you are (and you care what they think).
The pic you posted looks awesome to me and I'm half your age.

I've never considered that UKs are youth garb- I thought that kilts are kilts are kilts. But then again I'm 19 years old unless and until I look in the mirror.
I DO remember the shock-horror I felt the first time I saw my newly retired father in blue jeans-he'd always been an anti-"dungaree" crusader... but UKs? Surely not.

I never considered Kilts as age dependent garments. As someone who use to vent the Utilikilts booths, I've seen my customers age in range from early teens to well into retirement. Had an ole timer on a scooter ride into my booth at one faire.
No, the kilt should not be age restricted and neither should the kilt label.

I am not quite as old as you (62) but the hair and beard are gray, and I have 13 grandchildren who call me PopPop. Are we too old for Utilikilts? Well, I wear Flamingo kilts when I'm going contemporary, but I believe it's the same idea. NO! We are not! We lead active, vigorous lives. The ladies smile at us, and we remember (and can act on) why we smile back. Strap it on, and go forth and conquer!
P.S. When a lady other than my wife smiles at me, what I do is take that excitement back to her. She doesn't care where I get my appetite, as long as I come home for supper!

Instead of focusing on the issue of age, I would focus on uniqueness and fitting your needs. Hey, if you have a widget and people like it enough that you can sell it for $500 and you are successful all the power to you. I have been a little turned off by UK because I think they are over priced, and have gone a little too corporate. You had problems with them answering the phone? I have had others. And don't get me going on the shipping. Now I know they have great defenders here and I have seen some of the spirited defense messages. So I would say are there unique features, factors, design etc in the UK that another vendor doesn't have and they uniquely meet? Has this one really caught your fancy and no one else's does it for you? I would let those answers dictate my decision more than age. Now it may not be a factor at all but I will still throw it out. Since joining the addiction I have worked with a number of the "one man operation" vendors who frequent here and other boards and offer great service and product, often unique and custom made and fit. I often try to find a reason to use them first before another vendor. I just have a real appreciation for what they do and how I have been treated.

Just a cautionary note from someone who has found himself asking that question on occasion about various things...
It is perfectly okay to decide that you're too old to do (or wear) something. However, that choice is often stigmatized in our youth-worshipping culture. It's as if to choose to relinquish something for reasons of age is tantamount to "giving up" on having a vibrant life. Beware of that!
In fact, you don't have to an an "e" to old to make Old be an okay thing to be. And growing older can (not always!  ) mean growing wiser, growing more patient (and growing rounder, grayer, balder... if my mirror is to be trusted...  )
My $.02: choose to keep wearing Utilikilts if you really want to wear them, but don't do it if you think it somehow helps you hang on to your "youth." Embrace your mileage!  | | |
