Attending symphony kilted, vest or no?

Hello all

I am planning on wearing either the new USAK casual in American Heritage or the tank in McAuley hunting to a symphony next week in Ogden. Though some people that attend dont really dress up that much, black tie is not out of line. Sure, the casual doesnt have as many pleats, but it is a nice looking kilt. Anyone feel this would not be "enough" kilt for this type of event? Also, would you suggest a vest (black is the only one I have), or just white shirt and tie?

I would say wear your McAuley hunting kilt with the white shirt, black vest and tie.

What I was leaning towards, thanks. I dont have a jacket yet, so other than maybe a sweater instead of the vest, that'll have to work.

I would wear the hunting kilt, vest and tie. If you prefer the casual kilt, it's probably fine as long as it's heavyweight wool. I would still lean towards wearing a tank. I've rarely been out in public in any other kind of kilt.

Be very careful you are not wearing a "costume". As in Ogden, symphonies in Vancouver are attended by folk wearing all manner of daily attire. I wear a jacket and tie (never a PC): sometimes a business-weight black Argyle or a kilt-altered black or blue blazer and tie. Always a tie with a jacket.

At matinees I wear a dark tweed jacket.

If the majority of attendees in Ogden wear pretty casual clothing, I suggest you dress similarly: a shirt (and tie?) topped by a light, stylish "sweater" matching a base or over-stripe in your kilt. Definitely wear a leather sporran to match your belt (if you choose to wear one) and your shoes.

For shoes, wear black brogues (not ghillies) or polished slip-ons.

Smashing! but blending in, too.

I echo the vote for the hunting kilt with the vest..

I've worn my USA kilts casual to the San Francisco Symphony, but now that I have some nicer kilts, I reserve the casual for backpacking, throwing and general outdoorsy roughousing around.

A proper traditional kilt, white shirt, tie and charcoal sweater vest.. you can't go wrong.

I would say if you wear a kilt at all - you'd immediately stand out. I was semi-formally kilted at a recent Irish Tenors concert - and everybody was dressed in all sorts of garments (dressy, casual, rugged).

So, wear what you'll be most comfortable and confident in. Vest - yes!

And enjoy the concert!
