Backs of Belt Buckles

Hey folks i was wondering if any one could post or lead me to a picture of the back of a kilt belt buckle, i can't seem to find a picture of one. i have a kilt belt and buckle arriving shortly, but was wondering if i could use some of my other belt buckles on this same belt. but i noticed that kilt belts don't really seem to have holes so im kinda confused as to how it attaches. i would love to get a belt buckle with the Eagle Scout insignia on it to show my scout pride, much like i see many of the arms forces personnel with military buckles with their kilts.

Q: How does a kilt belt work?

A: The kilt belt is a “different animal” from a regular jeans belt. To attach a kilt belt, start with the end of the belt without the metal ‘D’. Slide the other end of the belt through the backside of the buckle with the corresponding metal bridge. Double the belt back on itself and attach the Velcro (or small strap and roller buckle) to itself. Now, the “hook end” of the buckle will be able to attach to the ‘D’ end of the belt. Adjust the kilt belt’s size by doubling the belt back on itself more or less until you get the proper size belt.

A kilt belt is also usually 1 1/2 to 2 inches in width (much wider than a standard jeans belt), so a standard belt buckle - the kind you get from Scout Stuff - wouldn't work. I'd also like to wear Scout-related belts & buckles when I'm piping for Scout functions. Someday I'll have something custom-made, or make it myself.

When I'm not piping for Scout events (and thereby in modified Scout uniform), I wear my Eagle Scout pin (not the medal with the ribbon, but the lapel pin of the Eagle by itself) in my hat, in addition to and forward of my clan crest.

Hopefully the the width you gave is a typo as all my kilt belts are 2.25" to 2.5" and I have seen them up to 3" My jean belts are 1.75"

Although kilt belts are usually quite wide there is no law that says they must be. Here in Scotland, Scouts and their leaders regularly wear a Scout belt with their kilts as part of uniform and the relatively narrow belt looks just fine

I have no idea what the US Eagle Scout badges are like but if you want to always wear a wider belt it should be easy enough to use a plain silver colour 2.25" buckle and to mount an Eagle Scout badge (cap badge, lapel pin etc) on to it either by drilling and screwing or by welding. The Royal Air Force pipers do something similar to this, having a brass colour replica of their cap badge screwed to the centre of a silver colour buckle

If you are thinking of using Western Buckles with a kilt belt, forget it. As you say the holes are missing. I was lucky to have a rectangular plain siver western buckle and black belt which I wear as a kilt belt.

If you are careful you can drill a hole through the center of a kilt buckle and attach a pin of your choice to it.

Take a punch set and make a dimple first to keep the drill bit from wandering and scratching up the front of the buckle.

If the emblem you want to use has a threaded back (like a Marine Corps Eagle Globe and Anchor emblem) a little thread lock helps. If it is a pin, consider using epoxy, jb weld or superglue to set it.

I just went through this modifying parade pistol belts for my Marine Corps League color guard uniform.

Yup, typo. That's what I get for posting when I'm tired and not double-checking my own belt.

Should have said about 2" or wider.


The following sizes have actually been measured using my medal and badges as a guide.

Regarding adding the Eagle Scout badge to a buckle - it's not that simple. The badge itself is cloth (a wax/plastic-backed patch), and is an oval about 2" wide x 2.5 - 3" tall. Unless you're wearing a small dinner plate for a belt buckle, not the right size.

Regarding the medal: the Eagle dangly bit (I think currently made of pewter or a pewter-plastic mix - cheap, IMO), hangs from a red-white-and-blue ribbon which is attached to a scroll bar with the Scout motto "Be prepared". Neither the Eagle nor the entire medal is of a size that would look right on a kilt belt buckle. The Eagle is about 1 1/4" wide x 1" tall and has detail front and back. The medal with ribbon & bar is about 1.5" wide x 3.5" tall overall. The bar has either clutch-back posts (about 1996 and newer) or a straight pin with clasp (like most kilt pins and crest badges have). I think the newer medals may be a little bit larger than mine. I personally wouldn't cannibalize my medal to put on a belt buckle because it can be worn with civilian attire (suits, etc.).

The lapel pins I have are about 0.25" overall, so they're too small to attach and be visible/discernable/recognizable. I've had several people peer closely at my lapel pin when wearing it on my navy blue suit to try to figure out what it was.

The BSA makes several different (at least 4 I can think of) Eagle Scout-themed buckles, just not of a size for kilt belts. It might be possible to adapt one, but you're getting into custom work, and possible trademark infringement since the Eagle Medal and other similar designs/symbols are trademarked by the BSA. If it were me, I'd get an OK before having the custom work done, unless you simply engrave 'Eagle Scout' on a belt buckle, without the Eagle motif.
