    Bagpipes….statement, not question

Yesterday afternoon I went to Hamilton, IN. It is a small town with most of the population living on the lake. Anyhow there is a small used car lot that I check on from time to time as I know the owners are always looking for old diesel Mercs to sell. Yesterday was the first time that I had worn a kilt to this location. A few moments after getting out f the car the wife of the owner came out to meet me. She looked a bit stunned just for a moment and said, “You have been playing bagpipes today”. I though that is was odd that she made a statement and said it in a manner as if she knew it were fact. I simply told here that I did not play the bagpipes and she wanted to change the subject after that.

I showed someone my picture in a kilt they other day, and they asked when I was going to take bagpipe lessons.

Why do people assume that if you're in a kilt, you must play the pipes?

It's a bit of a stereotype. I don't mind it, personally. But that's because I love bagpipes. Can't play them, but still.

At the local highland games this year, I was out with my digital SLR taking pics of the pipe bands, and she asked me when I was going to be playing.... she looked puzzled when I told her I wasn't.

Could have been the lack of kilted NON-participants at the event....

Yea - when I get a reaction (and usually I get no reaction at all) it seems to be that I play the pipes. I don't play them - don't know how, never tried. I do, however, like to listen.

I have found one really good use for my pipe cd's in the pick-em-up truck. They are the absolute perfect counter attack to the really loud rapper music coming out of the car next to me at the stop light.

Janis Joplin works good for that, too.

I do play the pipes, and immediately smile, chat them up, and proffer my card (there's always a few in my sporran).

Good to see I'm not the only one who does that ;)

Been my experience that many folks who ask me if I'll be playing the bagpipes are honestly hopeful they've found some to listen to.

Ask them if they play the steel guitar. Isn't everyone in Levi's a country musician?
