Big guys in kilts.

I've been thinking about it, and I've come to a realization. While almost all men look better kilted, it is nowhere more true than for us big guys. I think it must be because trousers have that crotch seam pulling the fabric back down and accentuating what no one can doubt is there. But in a kilt that curse is removed, allowing for both the freedom of movement that a large man will never find in trousers (not even in sweats, trust me!) and the ability to actually have a flattering line down the backside. So for those of us who have "a bit of a corporation" (an international conglomerate in my own case) kilts are the answer not just for comfort, but for an article of clothing that not only looks okay, but actually will turn heads and pull compliments-I cannot think of any other garment a fat man could wear that would do that.

I know what you mean. I'm huge. And while some of it is fat, a lot of me is muscle. I was down to about 200 pounds or less for a while, and I am back up to about 250. At one point, I was over 300... With about a 60 inch waist. I am gaining mass, but not much fat. I am still tipping in at a svelt mid 40s waist. The rest of me has bulked out a lot though. Legs are bigger and more solid than ever, calves, my biceps are over 24 inches.

Kilt has drastically improved the view of my own body image. I am a BIG person. I am happy with that. And while I am still a little pudgy in a few places, I am not a fat person. I am well insulated.

The kilt does other things for me, like covers up the fact I have no neck... People are to busy looking at the kilt to notice that God bolted my head directly on to my shoulders. The kilt makes me look taller... I don't know how or why, but I am your typical stubby little dwarf. (In the Tolkien sense) The kilt gives me shape and form, and defines my outline... Which pants never did. Pants just made my stubby legs look even shorter.

And everybody that knows me says it... Kilts just make me look 'right.'

Hear, hear. The first thing I was asked upon donning the kilt in front of a friend was "have you lost weight?" Of course, having the ****s to wear the thing and the swagger that goes with it helps!

I agree with you, Charles. I'm 6' 0" and 260 pounds. I'm not flabby - my stomach is actually quite hard. Plus my hip bones are high. I had always found that in order to make my belt look even from front to back with trousers, the crotch was always way to tight. IMHO, I look much better in a kilt than trousers, and I've worn kilts, both traditional and non-traditional full-time since August of 2005. One of the best decisions I ever made for my personal appearance and comfort.

I am pretty good sized, myself, about 280 lbs or so. I work as a welder, so it isn't all fat. I am getting a new kilt as I lost too much and my old one is falling down and needs to be reworked. I have to say the best advertisment for a big guy in a kilt is Josh at Neokilts. Josh is a very big boy. Stands about 6'5" and weighs in at about 350-400 lbs and says that he is living proof that he can fit a kilt on anyone. I have seen Josh in pants and in his kilt and believe me, the kilt fits much better and is more comfortable. I have found that I much prefer to wear a kilt over pants and am now getting my second kilt. One that can be machine washed and air dryed. Looking forward to wearing it much more than I have been. The wearing of my woolen one can be a bit scary (MacDonald of Glencoe tartan). I hate to think of what I would do to myself, if I stained it.

As a kiltmaker may I thank you guys for starting and posting on this thread.

I fit a lot of large men into kilts. I do my best to get the best fit and best look that I can. I don't always succeed but I do my best.

With threads like this, and more comments from men like yourselves, all kiltmakers will start to understand the problems unique to "Men of substance".

Again, thank you. And let's hear some more thoughts on how to look good in these things we call "The Noble Garment".
