Of course you know that lovat green hose and red flashes/garters go with everything. But you've got that covered. What about more unusual colors available in Hawick hose? Riverkilt's photo albums show most of the available colors.
Hawick's bottle green is a very nice color, and a several shades lighter than my GT bottle green hose. Their navy blue, by contrast, is extremely dark.
I have garters in tartan red. My eye places it between the ancient and modern hues, but closer to modern. Probably goes with either. The brick red, from those I've seen in photos, is nice looking.
I've seen the claret color used to good effect. Love the purple, but I don't think I'd use it with the MacPherson.
The yellow is unusual, and is very attractive as a garter. I aim to have some when I finish making my XMTS tartan kilt.

A glimpse of the tartan red garters with bottle green here. The kilt is not so light as ancient red, another in-between color:

Decisions, Decisions...
I bet a yellow (for the modern) or "mustard" colour hose for the ancient would work pretty well, with red flashes. Maybe a bit garish(?), but it would probably suite ole "Jock" there...
On the other hand, Lovat Green hose go with virtually every tartan in my opinion, especially if you're wanting to think in that British mindset for fashion...
Though I'd wager that as long as you can git your hands on a good pint of Guinness, it'll all be okay.

You could go Blue hose with Red Garter ties, something like this:

Or Yellow hose if you are feeling so bold, with any colour flashes or ties that you can think of.

I think what the Duke has figured out is that color VALUE sometimes trumps hue or shade. His pink hose are not merely pink they are RUDE pink. Working with what you have, I'd choose the ancient Robertson and some hose in either a strong medium green or sky blue. The more poisonous-looking, the better. House of Cheviot St Andrew's Blue is pretty good. Tie them up with weathered red garters. Good luck.

Brown or Oatmeal with lovat green, yellow, or even ancient blue flashes with the Ancient... particularly for daywear or casual evenings.
Awesome, thank you so much for your input and recommendations!

Thanks mate. Yes I agree completely, the lovat green hose does go with pretty much every kind of tartan out there, maybe with exception of the dress tartans! I know what you mean about "that British mindset"!
Cheers!

Sounds good. However, I do not have an ancient Robertson kilt, only Macpherson as I am a Macpherson. It's funny that you mentioned Robertson though, as my wife, Stephanie, is a Robertson! Thanks again mate.
